FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1) I heard that The Sistering Tree’s classes are mainly about birth art.

No. Birth art is only a small component of our comprehensive prenatal curriculum.  In these classes, parents are motivated to learn mindful coping practices.  Expectant parents engage in practical, hands on activities designed to support them confidently in preparation for the birth experience. Birth art is used a neutral medium to assist in facing the concerns families may have around their upcoming labour, as well as explore ideas around birth.

2) I’m planning on having an epidural (or a non-medical birth.) Is this mainly a natural childbirth class?

It is not a natural childbirth class. This holistic, non-judgemental approach to childbirth preparation honours many pathways. Whether you’re planning a home or hospital birth, want medicated or unmedicated support, your needs will be accepted. All families are welcome to attend the course regardless of their birth choices.

3) When is the best time in pregnancy to enroll in the course?

The best time to enroll is at 5 months or more in pregnancy. The closer a woman is to her due date, the more she will recall the techniques learned in class. It is important that the material learned and practiced remain fresh in her body memory, so that it is easily accessible during labour. If she enrolls in the course at only 2 months of pregnancy, then the information may seem far away or abstract.

4) What is the average class size?

Prenatal classes at The Sistering Tree are limited to seven women, including their birth partner. Considerable time is devoted to learning and practicing labour-coping techniques, asking questions, and discussing ways of how to get through the intensity of labour and birth. Expectant parents also share their joys, concerns or past experiences. By opening dialogue among participants in a small group setting, the emotional and psychological processes of birth preparation are supported.

5) Will I learn about baby care basics in the course?

Yes. The course addresses the topics of baby care, as well as the common newborn tests and procedures. Together, couples practice diapering, learn about cord care, swaddling your baby, and tips on how to sooth infant crying.

6) Will I learn about breastfeeding in the course?

Yes. Participants will gain a better understanding of the importance of breastfeeding, as well as learn how to establish successful positioning and latch. Course content also includes the anatomy and physiology of the breast and of milk production; how to mitigate common breastfeeding challenges; pumping and storage; and postpartum adjustment.

7) What if the group class conflicts with my schedule?

Consider prenatal private sessions. We recognize that each mother and baby and unique combination deserves childbirth preparation that is not ‘one size fits all.’ Personalized mentoring is available in a few different formats. Click on Private Sessions for more information

8) What if I need a particular kind of preparation which addresses the issues of past memories of birth?

As a preliminary step to childbirth preparation, some mothers wish to address past birth trauma in one’s own birth. Should you seek an opportunity to work with a Pre and Peri-natal Attachment practitioner through your own birth memories before going into labour, please contact Delia for a resource referral.
